Project 1: Depiction Identification Procedures
Recent examinations of depiction observed to occur in ASL discourse suggest that there are at least 11 different types of depiction where descriptions of settings or events are concerned. A procedure with which to identify depiction types for purposes of coding and analysis is needed. In this project we first develop and test a procedure to identify depiction types that fall under the "concrete regime" (McNeill 1995). We will then attempt to include ways to identify types of depiction that appear to fall into other, more abstract, spatial regimes.
