Name: Julie Guberman Hochgesang
From: Born in New Jersey, grew up in the suburbs north of Chicago, went to college in Los Angeles, lived in Kenya as a Peace Corps Volunteer, been in DC three years now. Interests: Fieldwork linguistics, the phonology of sign languages, and acquisition of sign languages in children.
Background: I graduated with a BA in English from CSUN. I started graduate school in English with a focus on linguistics there but dropped out to join the Peace Corps during which I went to Kenya and taught English and Kiswahili at a deaf school. During my two years there, I worked with some deaf adults on a dictionary of their sign language, Kenyan Sign Language (KSL). It was my experience there that led me to my current interest in fieldwork linguistics. During my graduate studies here at Gallaudet, I've worked at the Gallaudet Research Institute and with Professor Deborah Chen Pichler on various research projects.

Other info: He has just recently moved to Washington D.C. to earn his doctorate in Linguistics, and now inhabits a new cramped cave in Alexandria. His current focus is an eclectic blend of classifier usage, second language acquisition and whatever else you can fit in the blender. On his off time, he likes to read and spend time outdoors or travel. After the passage of an enormous number of years and the conferral of his Ph.D, he would like to continue to do linguistic research.
